Max Stress Character Brought To Life By Competition Winner

JB Springs recently ran a competition with a few regional universities to design a mascot for Springtelligence. The brief was to design an avatar to promote Springtelligence that would appeal to 5-10 year olds and in some way relate to springs. We received entries from Leeds Arts University, Leeds University and Manchester Metropolitan University. Once all of the entries were in, each employee was given the opportunity to vote for their favourite. Suzy Ellwood’s design from Leeds Arts University [...]

South Craven Careers Fair

Earlier this month JB Springs attended a careers fair at South Craven School. We spoke with many students about pursuing a career in engineering and the apprenticeships we offer. Our aim at JB Springs is to take on 2 or 3 new apprentices each year, some of whom have come from South Craven School previously, so this was a great opportunity to engage current students about careers in engineering and what JB Springs can offer as an employer. No Escape For Springtelligence Students

JB Springs apprentices and employees who fail to solve a series of spring based problems may find themselves spending more time at work than they planned. As part of our Springtelligence training and education programme, we have created an escape room which will be used as a hands-on form of assessment for the Level 1 Springtelligence course we run internally. The escape room is inside the original office from the John Binns & Son Factory at Fleece Street, Keighley. [...]

Alex Driver Becomes STEM Ambassador

Our MD Alex Driver has recently signed up to become a STEM Ambassador; he is the first of many John Binns’ employees that we hope will be signing up to become ambassadors.  This means he is now part of a community of 30,000 ambassadors across the UK. STEM refers to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics subjects. STEM Ambassadors are volunteers from the age of 17 that represent a vast range of STEM-related jobs and disciplines across the UK. They [...]

Fundamental Mistakes in Spring Design

Springs are very often overlooked in the design process of new products. It is no exaggeration to say that they are a key functional component in most mechanical devices and that, without a properly designed spring, the products functionality and lifespan is adversely affected. The spring is often considered a small and inexpensive part of a much larger article, therefore the designer will recognise that there is a requirement for a spring, but may leave the specification of the [...]

Skipton Girls High School progress to National Finals of Land Rover 4×4 In Schools Competition

Skipton Girls’ High School (SGHS) will compete in the National Final of the Land Rover 4×4 in Schools competition after winning their individual class in the Regional Finals.   SGHS entered two teams in the Land Rover 4×4 in Schools Technology Challenge, a Jaguar Land Rover Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) project where students design Land Rover vehicles of the future, with environmental and sustainability considerations. Students were required to build a radio-controlled four-wheel drive (4×4) vehicle to the [...]

This article was originally posted in 'Made in Yorkshire'. It’s exams results season and many young people will be deciding on what their next steps are. With companies valuing vocational qualifications over traditional further education qualifications, here are 5 reasons we young people should seriously consider a career in manufacturing and engineering. 1) The Pay There is a public perception that working in industry is dirty, highly demanding and low pay - but that viewpoint is outdated and wide of [...]

Factory Tour for Year 10 Pupils of Skipton Girls’ High School

Last month we welcomed the Year 10 pupils of Skipton Girls' High School to the factory, who were visiting a number of local companies to broaden their awareness of different engineering organisations. In any engineering industry there are physics involved, raw materials and processes, which all align with the curriculum content within the GCSE Engineering Specification. During their visit to JB Springs the students were provided with a presentation talk and tour of the factory facilities to show how [...]

Factory Tour for Keighley Association of Engineers

We were delighted to welcome members of the Keighley Association of Engineers to our factory last month. They were treated to a behind-the-scenes look into the complete spring manufacturing process which also included a question-and-answer session. With a history dating back over a hundred years, the Keighley Association of Engineers is as active today as when it first formed in 1900 ( just five years after JB Springs was founded in 1895!). Operating a syllabus of events throughout the [...]
