John Binns’ Former Employee Now England Rugby Scrum Coach

John Binns' former employee, Ian Peel, has recently landed the key role of scrum coach for the England rugby union team. In reminiscing about his days at the spring manufacturer, Ian is reported to have commented, "I often compare a good scrum to a well-made spring: they both need to squarely deliver the right amount of force at the right time." Nursery Equipment

John Binns recently supplied new toys and play equipment for the Caterpillar nursery group in Gargrave, just down the road from the company’s factory.  The thank-you card was enormous!

Sponsoring the Engineers of the Future

John Binns was delighted to be able to offer some sponsorship towards the construction costs for the new STEM innovation centre at Skipton Girls’ High School.  STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics; all core requirements for any budding spring experts!  The impressive building was opened in December by Professor Danielle George, who in 2014 became only the 6th woman in nearly 200 years to give the Royal Institution’s Christmas lecture.

ISO 9001:2008

Towards the end of last year John Binns successfully completed the renewal of the company’s ISO certification.  A copy of the new certificate is seen below.

Website Updated and More to Follow

The company’s website jbsprings.co.uk has been updated and further updates will follow shortly.  These will include new photographs and videos showing some of the new machines in action. As an example, here is the largest machine in the factory, a CNC lathe, coiling an auger from 20mm wire.  This machine can go up to 26.5mm wire!

Solidworks

To augment the service John Binns can offer its customers, further training has been undertaken in utilising the company’s SolidWorks CAD system.  John Binns always welcomes the opportunity to assist customers in any design or development projects, with the CAD system and the Fortus 400MC production grade 3D printer adding to the expertise in springs and wireforms.

A Look Back…

Continuing with the celebration of 128 years of business for John Binns & Son, here is another piece of John Binns history.  The old Factories Act from 1937 had to be displayed in the work place by law and was fastened to the side of the old works office, “the Tardis”, which featured in a previous month’s newsletter.

New Machinery

John Binns are proud to announce the arrival of another new piece of machinery. The Itaya RX40 will help us increase the production of parts, particularly torsion springs, tension springs and wireforms, in the 2mm – 4mm wire size category.  The company continues to invest in the very latest technologies to stay at the forefront of the spring manufacturing industry.

Apprenticeship Award for Tom

Congratulations to John Binns’ apprentice Tom Wright, who has won the Mechanical Engineering Learner of the Year award at his college.  Tom has become a valued member of the John Binns’ team and his success is just reward the efforts he has put into his training.
