Torsion spring design common pitfalls

What is a torsion spring? A torsion spring is a tightly coiled helical spring which stores and releases energy to resist force applied through torque. Nothing lasts forever. However, JB Springs' compression, torsion and tension springs are designed with a view to them having a very long lifespan – potentially outlasting other components within their application. The following factors can cause failure in compression springs and tension springs as well as torsion springs, however, this blog will focus on [...]

Who was Isambard Kingdom Brunel?

Who was Isambard Kingdom Brunel? Isambard Kingdom Brunel was a civil engineer known for constructing bridges, tunnels, viaducts and ships. Born on 9th April 1806 in Hampshire, Brunel was a prominent figure in the engineering industry due to his numerous, now-iconic projects. Heat Treatment: Ensuring high spring quality

In this blog post, we look at the use of heat treatment in spring manufacturing to optimise quality. The quality of any product is directly and heavily impacted by the procedures carried out during its production. There are a range of processes and practices which can be implemented to ensure the highest quality of manufacture is achieved, with heat treatment being one of these. The effect of temperature on initial tension and elastic limit of stainless steel [...]

Yorkshire Day

Did you know 1st August is Yorkshire Day? The event was first held in 1975 in Beverley as a protest against the reorganisation of local government in 1974, and the believed reason behind the chosen date is because on 1st August 1833, The Slavery Abolition Act was passed – for which Yorkshire MP William Wilberforce had been instrumental in the campaign. The reorganisation of local government involved the changing of the original boundaries and the introduction of county and [...]

Looking ahead to 2022

Despite the mention of 2022 perhaps seeming slightly premature(!), this month of August is the end of our financial year. We’d therefore like to take this opportunity to thank our brilliant customers and staff alike for the unwavering support throughout these unprecedented times. The last year has certainly presented its obvious challenges – experienced by companies across industries, but opportunities have equally been presented alongside these challenges and for those we’re also thankful! 2021 has ultimately more than proven [...]

Youth Skills Day

World Youth Skills Day was created back in 2014 at the general assembly of the United Nations. Held each year on 15th July, the event communicates the importance of skills and knowledge for the best chance of success in the working world. Over the last five years, the number of young people not in employment, education or training (NEET) has increased by around 14 million – to 273 million in 2021. Last year, the effect of COVID on the working [...]

Father’s Day

Happy Father’s Day to all the dads and granddads reading! Father’s Day is the third Sunday in June every year in the UK. However, it isn’t as historic as you might think! The event probably originated sometime after World War II – likely to honour the fathers who fought. Despite around half of countries (91 out of the 195!) celebrating the event on the same day as the UK, the date in other countries varies from 23rd [...]

Welcoming the Itaya RX20

In March, we invested in a brand new CNC machine – our second Itaya RX20. This machine is capable of producing torsion and tension springs, as well as wireform, from 0.5mm up to 2.0mm diameter wire. With a rotary wire feed and rotary wire guide mechanism, this machine makes creating complex wireform shapes accurate and efficient. The machine also boasts laser and camera measurement capabilities – contributing automation and accuracy to the production process of both wireform and compression, [...]
