Two New Recruits

Last year we welcomed two new members of staff – Des and Lisa Martin – to our despatch and purchasing team respectively. The couple both served in the RAF and bring a wealth of experience in a range of areas, making them valuable people in the JB Springs team. Des joined the RAF aged 16 and served for 22 years as an aircraft enginee. He worked on a variety of aircraft Chinook helicopters, Tornado, Victor and Typhoon throughout his [...]

Caterpillar Crawler Renovation Completion

Towards the end of last year, our team at JB Springs provided a spring for a vintage 1926 2-ton Caterpillar (CAT) crawler machine; from 1925 to 1928, 8,565 of these were made before being discontinued. Its spec includes a 3-speed gear transmission, 10-inch tracks and a lever that acts as the steering wheel. We recently received some pictures of the fully-renovated crawler – with our spring sitting in pride of place on the starting handle at the front (see [...]

STEM Ambassador Work

Our director at JB Springs, Alex Driver, volunteers as a STEM Ambassador. This involves sharing his industry knowledge and expertise through hosting talks and activities to spark an interest in STEM in younger generations. A vital part of securing a pipeline of future talent within the industry is nurturing this interest at a young age. At JB Springs, our Springtelligence initiative is just one of the ways we inform and inspire young people who are making key decisions regarding [...]

Common Mistakes in Torsion Spring Design – Video

Our brand-new Springtelligence video looks at the common mistakes made when designing a torsion spring. The four main spring design flaws which we look at and demonstrate in this video are: - Incorrect direction of operation - Inside diameter too small - Body length too large - Overstressing It is also important to consider: - The size of the mandrel over which the spring operates. The inside diameter of a torsion spring reduces during deflection; therefore, if insufficient space [...]

JB Springs’ Laser Cutting Capabilities

Last summer, we invested in a new AMADA LASMAC LC2415 Alpha IV NT laser cutter. With a maximum cutting speed of 20m/min and a CO₂ hybrid style laser and ball screw drive system, the machine cuts a maximum sheet of 5040mm x 1550mm x 300mm and is a further expansion of our offerings at JB Springs. Along with any spring and wireform requirements, be sure to get in touch with our team at JB Springs if you are interested [...]

John Binns Go Bowling

With a Matrix bowling alley 10 minutes up the road, at JB Springs we welcome any excuse for a team trip out! On the last Friday of January, we convened at Matrix after work and had a fantastic time winding down with some friendly (but competitive!) bowling.

The Skipton Santa Fun Run

The last Sunday of November each year for the past 11 years has seen a slew of Santa-suited locals merrily make their way around the 5km route which takes in the sights of Skipton – where our JB Springs facility is based. This year was no different. Organised by Skipton Rotary Club, the money raised by the event was donated to Sue Ryder Manorlands, as well as local and Rotarian charities. Local charities receive any money raised by the [...]

A Christmas Gift for the CAT

Recently, our team at JB Springs were asked for a spring that would fit a vintage 1926 2-ton Caterpillar (CAT) crawler machine. We were, of course, more than happy to help! Only 8,565 of this model were manufactured between 1925 and 1928 – in which year the 2-ton Caterpillar (pictured above) was discontinued. The machine has a 3-speed gear transmission, 10-inch tracks and a lever in place of a steering wheel. We gifted the spring for the CAT [...]

Case Study – Hart Walker UK

Local manufacturer Hart Walker UK design and produce hands-free walking devices for young people. They approached our JB Springs team regarding a specific torsion spring design for the brake system on their walkers. Subsequently, we worked with the customer and designed springs meeting their requirements. Now, our springs operate in the rear axle brake system. We tested first-off samples prior to making the production volume. Based in Keighley - 8 miles from our Skipton facility, they combine 30 years [...]

Machinery In Action: Latour Multi-Slide

One of our oldest pieces of machinery at JB Springs is the Latour Multi-Slide.  The Latour Multi-Slide provides the adaptability needed for our in-house trained engineers to produce simple and complex wireform parts alike. The video below shows the machine producing a hook coned into a tension spring. We undoubtedly love investing in new machines and putting them to good use (like our BM6 in our previous blog post but this old-timer still runs well and is just as [...]
